The Salary Question: More Than Just Numbers, It’s the Journey
I am a 28-year-old MA graduate from Kerala, earning ₹30,000–50,000 per month through my full-time job and freelance work. Academically, I have always been at the top of my game—graduating with university ranks of 3rd in my undergraduate degree and 2nd in my post-graduate studies. My journey has been anything but conventional. I pursued interior design for my undergraduate degree and then took a bold leap into Graphic Design for my post-graduation—two entirely different fields, but I had an insatiable hunger to learn.
After completing my degree, I was filled with hope and excitement. I was eager to land my first job, become financially independent, and support my parents—my first and foremost goal after years of education. But reality hit hard. Despite being called for multiple interviews, the salary offered was a mere ₹5000 per month—an amount far too low to sustain myself.

It sought to provide a more holistic view of value beyond paychecks. I wrote the article from a first-person perspective, sharing my academic achievements and unconventional transition from interior design to graphic design while reflecting on the nuances of personal success.

What is something others don’t know about you but you wished others knew?
We all present different versions of ourselves depending on the situation, but there are things I wish my friends truly knew about me. Not just the surface-level things, but my personal life. This is for my friends who know me, love me, and share moments with me, so you can see beyond the laughter and the energy to the person I am underneath.
Friendships are an important part of my personal life. I love making people laugh, creating shared memories, and being there when someone needs me. But what many people don’t realize is that I also need time to recharge. Its not about avoiding people but its about refuelling my energy so I can continue being the best version of myself.

What was one of the most difficult challenges you had to face?
One of the most difficult challenges I faced was deciding to move to Canada for further studies. It was a huge decision, involving financial investment, adopting to a new culture, and leaving behind family and friends. The uncertainty of whether it would work out, combined with the pressure of succeeding, made it overwhelming.
To overcome it, I planned meticulously-researching courses, applying to colleges, securing funding, and ensuring I had a support system in place. I reminded myself of my long-term goals, which kept me focused. The transition was tough, but I learned to adapt, manage responsibilities, and push through self-doubt.

I wrote the article based on my real-life experience of relocating from India to Canada, offering honest insight into the fears and hopes of such a major life decision.

3 things that I am proud of this year?
This year had its share of ups and downs, but I’m truly proud of how far I’ve come. Here are the top 3 things I’m most proud of in 2025.
1. Volunteering for events
After being laid off from my part-time job in late November, I made a choice: instead of seeing it as a setback, I saw it as a chance to explore new opportunities. I started volunteering for various college events, stepping out of my comfort zone. Through this, I met new people, built strong connections, and discovered parts of myself I hadn’t tapped into before.
Project Background
This article was created as a self-reflection and year-end recap, meant to highlight milestones in personal and professional growth after facing a challenging period of job loss and transition. I identified and articulated three key personal achievements from the year—volunteering, academic success, and content creation, framing them as moments of growth.
